Cleveland Students Leave Digital Desert Behind | Verizon Innovative Learning
Miles Park School is a PreK-8 school on the city’s southeast side. Many students’ families cannot afford internet access, says school principal Tamika Taylor-Ivory. When she arrived at Miles Park School eight years ago, there was little technology or digital learning. Teachers relied on textbooks and administered pencil-and-paper tests.
“I wanted our school building to be the feeder to the community,” adds Taylor-Ivory. “We educate the kids and provide them with the resources that are necessary to become 21st-century learners. The goal was that if we taught them those skills, they would go home or go into the community and be able to educate others.”

The Way of the Grandmaster Barber
Detail Dale, grandmaster barber and shop owner, started his journey with a pair of clippers he found. Unsatisfied with his new haircut, he gave himself the style he wanted. People saw, people raved. “From that point on I started trimming my own hair, which led to me trimming everyone else’s hair and it snowballed from there.” From a modest basement operation in 1983 to an apprenticeship and now his own successful barbershop, Dale has cultivated a community and pays forward his wisdom.

Project Pearls - Quest for Love
In Bulacan, Project Pearls supports over 300 children through an educational scholarship program and trainings for families on livelihood support. The families used to live in Tondo, Manila where their main livelihood was the production of charcoal. The families – where mostly women and little children contend all day with the heat, fumes, dust, stench, flies, mosquitoes, and vermin – work all day to earn a paltry income of around Php 100.00 ($ 2.00) a day. The communities were relocated by the Philippine government to Bocaue, Bulacan, into a housing project several hours outside of the Manila area. Although they were given housing, the communities no longer had any livelihood opportunities without living nearby garbage. This video was created for a grant proposal to create a livelihood program for the mothers to produce clothing and other items.
